Put survey points in a group and build a surface

4 Nov 2026 · Survey points

Name a set of field points, then add that group to a surface so the TIN uses those points.

A point group is a named list of survey points. All Points is the whole database. A named group is a subset you choose. Deleting a group leaves the points in the drawing.

Bring the points in first with Import survey points from a file or from Excel.

Create a group

Select the civil points on the canvas.

  1. Run ADDTOGROUP (alias ATG), or choose Civil › Points › Add to Group….
  2. Type a new name, such as SURVEY1, or pick a group that already exists.
  3. The command line reports how many points were added.

The same group can be made in other ways:

  • Right-click the selected points and choose New Group…, or the name of a group that already exists.
  • In Point Manager (Civil › Points › Point Manager…), right-click a sheet tab and choose New Group…. On the All Points tab, select the rows and click To Group.
  • Run CREATEGROUP (alias CRG). Type the name, click the points, and press Enter.

The group is a tab in Point Manager and a node under Points in the Civil Toolspace. Ungroup, or REMOVEFROMGROUP (alias RFG), takes points out of the group and leaves them in All Points. Delete Group removes the name only.

Add the group to a surface

  1. Choose Civil › Surfaces › Create Surface…. IQcad adds an empty surface, named Surface_1, Surface_2, and so on.
  2. In the Civil Toolspace, expand that surface and right-click Definition.
  3. Choose Add Point Group....
  4. Tick the group. The dialog lists All Points and each named group, with a point count. Click OK.

IQcad triangulates the ticked points. The surface statistics show the point count, and the surface style draws the contours. Tick All Points when the TIN should use every survey point in the drawing.

Surface from survey points adds the group SURVEY1 to a new surface and builds the TIN.
